Cherry Cranberry Spiced Chutney


1 tbsp unsalted butter
1 med onion, diced
pinch of salt

3/4 c brown sugar
1 tsp Chinese 5 Spice
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp ground clove

12 oz cranberries
10 oz cherries
1 granny smith apple, cored, peeled, diced
zest of one lemon
1/2 tsp grated ginger
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp rice vinegar
1/3 c water

Melt the butter in the a large heavy saucepan

Add the onion and salt and sautee until soft and translucent.

Add the cranberries, cherries, apple, lemon zest and ginger. Stir well and add the vinegars and water.

Bring the mixture to a boil and reduce the heat to medium and simmer, stirring occasionally until most of the berries have popped and the fruit is tender. Let the mixture cool and serve.
